How do I protect my children online?
Our children rely on the Internet more than ever for communication, school work, and socialization in general. While the Internet can be a powerful and effective tool for our children, it is important to remember that with any technology comes risk. These risks can range from low to high, varying between online bullying to child exploitation and predation. Inter Mountain Cable is committed to providing a safe and secure Internet experience and has devised a number of tips and tools to help protect children while online.

  • Parental Controls: IMC offers Propel Accelerator that comes with powerful parental controls to help filter out inappropriate content and also monitor Internet activity to help prevent identity theft. These controls provide filtering of websites with offensive content and can even be configured to only allow websites that you specify.
  • Communication: Talk to your children about their online experience so that they are more likely to share uncomfortable situations.
  • Private Information: Children may not understand the significance of sharing their personal information on the Internet. Help your children understand that some information (e.g., their address, phone number, school, etc) is private and should not be shared on the Internet.
  • Contract: Avoid confusion and establish clear rules surrounding Internet communication. A family contract is a useful tool to establish rules regarding information that cannot be shared online.
  • Explain the dangers of meeting someone in person, and other important information.
  • Location: Keep the home computers located in a central area of the house and never in a private location (e.g., the child's room). The public presence of the computer and your close proximity will serve as a continual obstacle to strangers attempting to lure your child.
  • Chat Rooms: Advise your child to always remain in public areas of chat rooms. Often times, chat rooms have "private" areas where chat monitors have limited ability to log conversations.

How to protect your PC from worms, viruses and other intruders
To protect your PC, we strongly recommend the use of a firewall.

Using a firewall:

  • Protects your personal information by placing a barrier between worms, hackers and your computer.
  • Records potentially hostile Internet traffic and alerts you. This is valuable information to use when reporting security problems.
  • Monitors Internet and network activity and controls application access to the Internet.

IMC offers all of it's customers F-Secure Internet Security (for a small fee) providing both a Firewall and Antivirus protection.

How can I avoid pop-up advertisements?
There are several causes for those annoying pop-up browser windows, and many solutions. The most common cause of pop-ups are pieces of software installed on your computer, and very often these applications installed themselves without your knowledge. These programs are referred to as "spyware".

Some web pages embed pop-ups in their sites on purpose. Even if you have cleared your system of all spyware programs, these type of pop-ups can be slightly harder to avoid. The most common way to block these pop-ups is to install a "pop-up blocking" program. Inter Mountain Cable offers Propel to combat these pop-ups. Propel can block pop-ups and guards your computer against spyware. Contact our 24/7 Helpdesk for more information.

1. What is Cable Modem?
A cable modem is a communication device that converts digital information (e.g., from a PC) into modulated RF signals (upstream) and RF signals back to digital information (downstream) across cable TV (hybrid fiber/coax) networks. A cable modem has four connections, one for the coaxial cable (cable outlet), one for the power (power receptacle) and the others connect to the computer (e.g., via Ethernet or USB). Because cable operates at a much higher bandwidth than the phone line, Internet access over cable can be 50-100 times faster than dialup. Anyone who has ever surfed the Internet using a 56K modem knows, connections are painfully slow, especially when downloading photographs, graphics or video images. Unlike a 56K modem, the cable Internet connection is always on. There is no dialup or use of your phone line.
2. Does IMCTV require a phone line? Will it save me money
A phone line is not required. As a Inter Mountain Cable customer, you will be provided with a high-speed cable modem that links your computer(s) to the fiber-optic/coaxial cable network and our server complex that resides in Harold, Kentucky.
3. Is broadband Internet service the same as high-speed Internet service?
Broadband and high-speed are interchangeable terms used to refer to the power of the Internet connection you are using.
4. Is DSL Internet faster than Cable Internet?
No. DSL modems and cable modems are only mediums, transporters of a broadband signal that is generated from your service provider. So, when you purchase broadband service, you get the speed that you are paying for.
5. Where should I put my cable modem after installation?
We recommend that you tell you Inter Mountain Cable professional installer were you would like your broadband connection ran too. (plus, go ahead and have your computer moved to the desired location before the installers arrives to your home) Also, after the cable modem has been installed, keep it in open space to prevent heating up. If you should experience problems with your new cable modem, please Contact Us and Inter Mountain Cable will help anyway that we can to resolve you issue.
6. Why should I get broadband service with IMC?
Broadband Internet allows you to receive more information quickly and do more on the Internet by giving you:
  • An always-on connection – no busy signals or dial-up frustrations to deal with
  • Blazing speed – up to 109 times faster than dial-up
  • IMC cable modems require no phone connection, so therefore no missed calls
  • Multiple e-mail accounts (10 total)
  • Fast video and music downloads
7. What is my contract obligation?
There is normally a (1) year agreement with Inter Mountain Cable Broadband Services (ala carte). This is the commitment you must make to receive the indicated price and promotions. But, if you are obtaining High Speed Cable Internet Service with a particular bundle, then agreement terms may extend for more than two years. Please ask our knowledgeable Customer Service Staff about contact agreements when signing up for Broadband Service.
8. What upload speed should I get if I am a gamer and have Inter Mountain Cable Digital Phone (VoIP) Service?
We recommend that all gamers (Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) get at least 512k upload speed to enjoy both talk and gaming at the same time. At this time Inter Mountain Cable has created new bundles that cater to your needs. Please visit http://www.imctv.com/digital_phone_pricing.php for more information.
9. What’s the difference between upstream and downstream speeds?
Information passes between your computer and the Internet in two directions: upstream and downstream. Information that flows upstream is sent from your computer to the Internet, such as sending e-mail attachments or playing two-way games. Information that flows downstream is from the Internet to your computer, such as surfing the Web or downloading files. Please note that broadband service speeds are an estimate. The actual speed varies by provider and may vary.
10. What does static IP address mean?
A static Internet protocol address is a unique number assigned to your computer by your service provider. Static IPs are permanent numbers that always identify your computer to others on the Internet. Many providers limit the number of static IPs they assign. Some providers also charge additional fees for additional static IPs. Certain two-way applications such as VoIP (Voice over IP) require static IP addresses in order to work correctly.
11. Why can't I get online?
  1. First check that your coaxial cable, power, and Ethernet/USB connections are plugged in securely on the back of the modem.
  2. Check to see if your modem is connected to the WOW! Network. You can verify this by looking at the Cable or Online light on your modem.

If this light on and not blinking:
  • If you have a router, unplug the router from electricity for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Reboot your computer, and check for a connection.
  • If you still do not have a connection, if you are running a software firewall (F-Secure, Mcafee Internet Security, Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, etc), try temporarily disabling this service and check for a connection.

If the Cable or Online light is not solid green:
  • If your modem has US and DS lights and both are blinking in unison, push the Standby button (this will be a small, grey button on the front of the modem). If the Online/Cable light comes on and does not blink, reboot your computer, and check for a connection.
  • If your modem does not have US and DS lights, try power cycling your modem by unplugging the power cord from the modem. Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 1-2 minutes. If the Cable/Online light comes on and does not blink, reboot your computer, and check for a connection.
  • Try resetting your cable modem. On the back of the modem where the cables are located, there is a small hole labeled "Reset". Insert an unfolded paperclip (or toothpick or something similar in size) for 2-3 seconds. Wait 1-2 minutes. If the Cable or Online light comes on and does not blink, reboot your computer, and check for a connection.
  • If the Cable/Online light is still not solid after these steps, please contact Customer Support at 1-888-921-2525. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
12. I've heard that DSL is a dedicated line and cable is a shared line. Is that true?
That is partially true. Cable lines are shared within a neighborhood and if a number of subscribers in the same neighborhood all ask to download files at the same time, performance will be slowed. What the DSL service providers are not telling you is that while DSL subscribers do not share the line in their neighborhood, they do share the link between their own central office and the network backbone, so the bottleneck still occurs during peak usage - it just occurs in a different place in the network. Also, DSL slows down the further you get from their central office.
